UN Chief says Yemen tensions could spark wider regional escalation
Speaking at a news conference at UN Headquarters in New York after briefing the Security Council, Guterres said: "I have just briefed the Security Council on the situation in Yemen, fresh off my visit to the region, including Saudi Arabia and Oman." He noted that “tensions have been simmering across Yemen,” with “dramatic new developments in the eastern governorates” as forces affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council (STC) advanced on Hadramawt and al-Mahra.
He emphasized: "Unilateral actions will not clear a path to peace. They deepen divisions.
Harden positions. And raise the risk of wider escalation and further fragmentation." Guterres warned that a full resumption of hostilities could have serious implications for regional security, including the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Horn of Africa.
Calling for restraint, he said: "I urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint, de-escalate tensions, and resolve differences through dialogue," stressing that “the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Yemen must be preserved.”
Guterres highlighted the need for a sustainable, negotiated political settlement that “embraces the aspirations of all Yemenis and brings this devastating conflict to an end.” He underscored the humanitarian toll: “Nearly 4.8 million have fled their homes. And 19.5 million need humanitarian assistance.”
He strongly condemned the ongoing arbitrary detention of 59 UN colleagues and partner personnel, calling for “their immediate and unconditional release, in accordance with international law,” and adding: "The continued detention of our colleagues is a profound injustice."
Despite the challenges, Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to Yemen, urging all parties to “prioritize dialogue over violence” and emphasizing: “The people of Yemen demand and deserve peace.”
