Trump warns of further attacks on Iranian nuclear programs
In June, the US and Israel conducted coordinated airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, claiming the operations were intended to prevent Tehran from advancing its nuclear program. Iran has denied any pursuit of nuclear weapons and condemned the strikes as unprovoked violations of its sovereignty, stating that the damaged facilities will be rebuilt and uranium enrichment will continue.
“If it’s confirmed, they know the consequences, and the consequences will be very powerful, maybe more powerful than the last time,” Trump said on Monday. “We’ll knock them down. We’ll knock the hell out of them. But hopefully that’s not happening.”
Trump also stated he would “absolutely” support Israeli military action against Iran’s missile program and indicated that the US would act “immediately” against any nuclear developments. He added that it would be “much smarter” for Tehran to “make a deal” with Washington, noting that Iran missed an opportunity “the last time, before we went through a big attack on them.”
Omani-mediated negotiations between the US and Iran were suspended earlier this year after the joint US-Israeli bombing campaign. In October, the EU and UK reinstated sanctions on Iran that had previously been lifted under the 2015 nuclear agreement, which the US withdrew from during Trump’s first term. Tehran has since stated that it is no longer bound by the accord.
Iran has maintained that it is open to reaching a deal with the US, but only if Washington ends what Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi previously described as “impossible and unacceptable preconditions.”
